BOZEMAN, Mont., October 10, 2013 — The Great Falls Americans Junior A hockey team won their fifth straight game 8-3 over the host Bozeman Ice Dogs on Thursday night at Haynes Pavilion in Bozeman, MT. The Americans are the only undefeated team left in the American West Hockey League.
The Americans were led by Aaron McInnis’ three goals in the final two periods including the final score with less than two minutes left in the AWHL contest.
Bozeman scored on a power play by Austin Nottke to give the Ice Dogs their only lead of the night. California native Cody Page tied the game as he scored his second goal of the season off a pass by Zachary Mese. Three different players (Brady Christiaens, Doug Keller and Aaron McInnis) would score for the Americans in the second period as Great Falls maintained a three goal lead (4-1) heading into the second intermission.
Dylan Garton and Christiaens would each score in the first four minutes of the third before Bozeman’s Jake Nelson found the back of the net. McInnis would get his fifth and sixth goals on the season to finish the evening for Great Falls. Jake Nicks chipped in Bozeman’s final goal with 3:43 remaining.
Zachary Mese, Donovan Mattfeldt and Lucas Lomax tallied two assists each for the Americans. Great Falls made the Bozeman goaltenders work as they took 41 shots and forced 33 saves. Evan Hauser, the Americans goaltender, recorded 28 saves. The Americans scored three of their goals off power play opportunities.
The Americans went 3-for-5 on power play opportunities and the Ice Dogs accrued 34 penalty minutes.
League leading Great Falls moves their record to 5-0 and the Ice Dogs are still searching for their first win (0-4) of the season.
NEXT CONTEST: Great Falls returns to the Great Falls Ice Plex on Saturday, October 12th to challenge the Billings Bulls.
