August 7, 2013 — The American West Hockey League (AWHL) is pleased to announce the selection of a new commissioner, effective July 1, 2013. Garry Swain, a former NHL hockey player, has held a variety of executive and ownership positions in several businesses.  He will head up the seven team Tier III Junior League that includes teams in Wyoming and Montana.

Swain, a first round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Penguins, played 9 years of professional hockey before embarking on a successful career in business management, including a consulting group focused on team building and leadership skills development.  Swain said, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to not only help develop the AWHL into one of the finest junior leagues in the country, but also to ensure all our players are given every chance to reach their full potential.”

The 2013-2014 AWHL regular season kicks off in September and brings an exciting and fun level of hockey to communities in Montana and Wyoming.  Montana teams include Bozeman, Billings, Helena, Great Falls, and Whitefish, with Wyoming teams in Gillette and Cody.
