GENEVA, Ill. – Lucas Lomax opened the scoring, but the 2013 National Champions proved too much for the Great Falls Americans on Saturday night.
Lomax, the forward from Phoenix who played in his final game in an Americans’ jersey Saturday, scored three minutes into their third and last contest of the North American 3 Hockey League Silver Cup to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by newcomer Josh Larson.
It wasn’t close to enough, however, as the North Iowa Bulls, the two-time defending Silver Cup champions, tallied six unanswered and cruised past the Americans, 6-1, at the Fox Valley Ice Garden.
Great Falls net minder Jordan Moran was peppered by the Bulls, who outshot the Americans 53-21. North Iowa’s Joe Burgmeier lit the lamp twice shortly after the Lomax goal, and the Bulls added three more in the second period, to cruise to victory. The Bulls will go for their third straight championship Sunday against Granite City at 1 in the afternoon. Both teams have already qualified for Tier III Nationals in Simsbury, Conn., next week.
The season now comes to a close for the Frontier Division champions. Head coach Jeff Heimel and his group finished the campaign with a 38-13-3 record after losing all three of their games this week.
