Trent Cowden took a feed from Jack Olson and found the back of the net with seven seconds remaining, boosting the Great Falls Americans to a 5-4 overtime win over the Helena Bighorns, sending 1,156 fans of the Electric City’s NA3HL Frontier Division squad home from the IcePlex happy.
Cowden’s goal, his fifth of the season, came less than five minutes after Helena’s Elliot Plourde tied the match at 4-4 with just three seconds left in regulation after Bighorn goalie Carver Thompson skated away from his net to give his team an extra skater.
Thompson came back on after Plourde’s tally and would be the victim of the goal Cowden registered that sent everyone home.
Nate Simpson, Jens Juliussen, Payton McSharry and Dylan Olson all scored in regulation for the Americans, who earned two points in the win column (29-7-0-1). With 59 points, Great Falls now hold a three-points advantage over the Bighorns (27-5-2-0, 56 points) for the Frontier Division lead with less than two months remaining in the season.
Drew Scites got the win in goal for Great Falls, collecting 47 saves.
The Missoula Junior Bruins are next to face the Americans. The puck drops Saturday night at 7:30 at the IcePlex on Gore Hill.
