GILLETTE, Wyo., January 3, 2014 — Three Days after the Great Falls Americans came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Billings Bulls, the Americans wasted no time finding the back of the net in their first game of the new year against the Gillette Wild. Great Falls scored three of their five goals in the first period to edge the Wild 5-3 in front of 468 fans at the Campbell County Ice Arena.
TJ McMinn’s pass to Dalton McCann put the Wild on top 1-0 in the first 85 seconds of action. Donovan Mattfeldt, Brady Christiaens, and Steven Goran each collected power play goals as Great Falls built a 3-1 lead after the first twenty minutes. Erik Gatson recorded two assists while Cody Page, Zachary Mese, Lucas Lomax and Dylan Garton tallied one apiece.
Austin Krantz tallied the only goal for both teams in the second period to increase the lead for coach Jeff Heimel’s Americans squad to 4-1. Lomax picked up his second assist and Tanner Doty also added his first of the game. Gillette out-shot the Americans 15-10.
During the final period, Greg Sauers cut the deficit for the Wild to 4-2 on his power play goal off the stick of Andrii Istominov five minutes into the period. Lucas Lomax tacked on the final goal of the evening for the Americans with Doug Keller and Donovan Mattfeldt assisting on the scoring drive. Will Fobair chipped in the final goal for the Wyoming squad with less than two minutes remaining.
Great Falls made Gillette’s goaltenders (Michael Kitts and Josh Beatty) work hard and without much rest by forcing 30 saves on 35 shot attempts. Erik Powell registered 39 saves and Great Falls scored on their first three power plays in the first period.
Lomax led the team with a goal and two assists while teammate Donovan Mattfeldt had a goal and one assist for the Great Falls franchise. Dalton McCann, Will Fobair and Greg Sauers each chipped in a goal for the Wild.
