BILLINGS, Mont., November 30, 2013 — A night after defeating the Bozeman Ice Dogs on home ice 5-2, the Great Falls Americans traveled to Billings for a game against the Billings Bulls. After getting shut-out in the first period by the Bulls, the Great Falls Americans racked up three goals apiece in the second and third periods to defeat Billings 6-3 at the Centennial Ice Garden on Saturday night. Aaron McInnis, the Americans team leader in points, tallied a goal and two assists in the Americans victory.
There wasn’t a lot of scoring during the first period but the Billings club took a 1-0 lead with Steven Thompson’s goal in the first 18 seconds of action. Cody Phillips and Tristen Heinrichs added the assists for the Bulls.
The Americans took charge in the next period with three straight goals including power play goals from Dylan Garton and Johnathan Carpenter. Garton’s goal was assisted by Cody Page and Aaron McInnis while Dylan Garton and Donovan Mattfeldt were credited with assists on Carpenter’s score. Aaron McInnis picked up his second assist of the evening as Lucas Lomax got the puck by Billings goaltender Cole Semchack. Dexter Nealy scored on a power play opportunity for Billings with 52 second left before the second intermission as they trailed Great Falls 3-2.
Aaron McInnis scored his 19th goal of the season at the 8:32 mark of the final period off a pass from Erik Gatson and Lucas Stover to increase the lead to 4-2. Zachary Mese added the first of his two third period goals with less than five minutes remaining. He also added the final goal of the night for both teams near the end of the AWHL contest. Sam Orth also connected on a score for Billings off the stick of Dixon Whitehead. Connor Barta added two of his 11 total assists on the season while Donovan Mattfeldt and Brady Christiaens also came away with one assist apiece.
Great Falls allowed only one goal in 13 power play opportunities and they registered 34 shots against Billings. Erik Powell had lots of activity as the Americans goaltender as he made 48 saves on 51 shot attempts by the Bulls. Cole Semchak, the Billings goalie, stopped 28 shots by the Americans.
NEXT CONTEST: The Americans (18-4) will return to the Great Falls Ice Plex on Sunday, December 1, 2013 with an AWHL matinee contest against top-ranked Helena Bighorns (20-1-1) at 4:00PM.
